The Palio di Siena, a medieval era bareback horse race, by tradition takes place each year on the 2nd of July and 16th of August. This painting represents the July, 1990, winning horse, Galleggiante, jockeyed by Bastiano for the Giraffe contrada as they complete the infamous San Martino bend.
